The Sutra of Bodhisattva Parnashavari-Avalokiteshvara (葉衣觀自在菩薩經)

 

This short sutra was translated into Chinese by Amoghavajra (不空; 705–74) during the Tang Dyanasty. It is also referred as the Sutra of the Dharani of Bodhisattva Parnashavari-Avalokiteshvara (葉衣觀自在菩薩陀羅尼經).

The entire sutras has yet to be translated into English, although the transliteration of its dharani and mantras are already available.

Parṇaśavarī-nāma-dhāraṇī:

Namo ratna-trayāya. Namo amitābhāya tathāgatāya arhate samyak-saṃbuddhāya. Nama ārya-avalokiteśvarāya bodhisattvāya mahāsattvāya mahā-kāruṇikāya. Namo mahā-sthāma-prāptāya bodhisattvāya mahāsattvāya mahā-kāruṇikāya. Vāmanī tvāṃ namasyāmi, tvaṃ namasyāmi vāmanī piśācī parṇa-śavarī. Parṇa-śavarī piśācī bhagavatī paraśu pāśa dhāriṇi. Yāni kāni-cit bhayāni ut-padya, mānāni ut-pādyante, yāḥ kāś-cid ītiyo, yāḥ kāś cit māryo, yāḥ kāś cit mahā-māryo, ye ke-cid upa-dravā, ye ke-cid upā-yāsā, ye ke-cid vyādhiya, ye ke-cid upa-plava, ye ke-cid upa-sarge, upa-sarga samanta-avā, ut-pādyante sarvā-nitāni sarva-astāṃ, sarvete vārita ebhyot-pādyantena. Paṇḍitatā sthānanena satyena, satya vākena jyā jyā jyā jyā, ebhiś caḥ paṇḍita adhiṣṭhitai mantra-padai mama sarva sattvānāṃ ca rakṣāṃ kuru, guptiṃ kuru, pari-trāṇaṃ kuru, pari-grahaṃ kuru, pari-pālanaṃ kuru, śāntiṃ kuru, svasty-ayanaṃ kuru, daṇḍa pari-hāraṃ kuru, śastra pari-hāraṃ kuru, agni pari-hāraṃ kuru, udaka pari-hāraṃ kuru, kākhorda chedanaṃ kuru, viṣa-dūṣaṇaṃ kuru, viṣa nāśanaṃ kuru, sīmā-bandhaṃ kuru, dhāraṇī-bandhaṃ caḥ kuru. Tadyathā, om, amṛte amṛtod-bhave ā-śvastāṅge, mā mara, mā mara, śama pra-śama, dhūnu vi-dhūnu, dhurye dhū mūle svāhā.

The Heart Mantra:

​

Oṃ, parṇa-śavari huṃ phaṭ.

 

After the dhāraṇī and the heart mantra are proclaimed, its benefits are disclosed :

- If the dhāraṇī is recited once, oneself will be protected.

- If recited twice, the partner will be protected.

- If recited thrice, the family will be protected.

- If recited four times, the vicinity will be protected.

- If recited five times, the country will be protected.

Also revealed is the practice of invoking the 28 Yakṣa Generals in all directions by using the Takki Raja mantra as the basis for the 28 different mantras for the Yakṣa Generals. Please note that the full details of the practice are not translated here.

Starting on the eastern wall and paste the mantras of the following 4 Great Yakṣa Generals, namely

 

The mantra of the first Yakṣa General:

Oṃ, dīrgha ṭakki huṃ jyā svāhā.

 

The mantra of the second Yakṣa General:

Oṃ, su-netra ṭakki huṃ jyā svāhā.

 

The mantra of the third Yakṣa General:

Oṃ, pūrṇaka ṭakki huṃ jyā svāhā.

 

The mantra of the fourth Yakṣa General:

Oṃ, kapila ṭakki huṃ jyā svāhā.

 

Next, on the southern wall and paste the mantras of the following 4 Great Yakṣa Generals.

 

The mantra of the first Yakṣa General:

Oṃ, saṃ-ghaṭa ṭakki huṃ jyā svāhā.

 

The mantra of the second Yakṣa General:

Oṃ, upa-saṃghaṭa ṭakki huṃ jyā svāhā.

 

The mantra of the third Yakṣa General:

Oṃ, śaṅkhila ṭakki huṃ jyā svāhā.

Next, on the northern wall and paste the mantras of the following 4 Great Yakṣa Generals.

 

The mantra of the first Yakṣa General:

Oṃ, dhāraṇa ṭakki huṃ jyā svāhā.

 

The mantra of the second Yakṣa General:

Oṃ, dhara-daṇḍa ṭakki huṃ jyā svāhā.

 

The mantra of the third Yakṣa General:

Oṃ, udyoga-pāla ṭakki huṃ jyā svāhā.

 

The mantra of the fourth Yakṣa General:

Oṃ, viṣṇu ṭakki huṃ jyā svāhā.

 

At the northeast corner, the mantra of the Yakṣa General is:

Oṃ, pāñcika ṭakki huṃ jyā svāhā.

 

At the southeast corner, the mantra of the Yakṣa General is:

Oṃ, pañcāla-gaṇḍa ṭakki huṃ jyā svāhā.

 

At the southeast corner, the mantra of the Yakṣa General is:

Oṃ, sātā-giri ṭakki huṃ jyā svāhā.

 

At the northwest corner, the mantra of the Yakṣa General is:

Oṃ, hemavata ṭakki huṃ jyā svāhā.

 

Next, for the lower direction, without stepping on the stones, inscribe the mantras of the 4 Yakṣa Generals on them and regarding the 4 directions beneath:

 

For the eastern ground below, the mantra of the Yakṣa General is:

Oṃ, bhauma ṭakki huṃ jyā svāhā.

 

For the southern ground below, the mantra of the Yakṣa General is:

Oṃ, su-bhauma ṭakki huṃ jyā svāhā.

 

For the western ground below, the mantra of the Yakṣa General is:

Oṃ, kāla ṭakki huṃ jyā svāhā.

 

For the northern ground below, the mantra of the Yakṣa General is:

Oṃ, upa-kāla ṭakki huṃ jyā svāhā.

 

Next, for the upper 4 corners of the premise, paste the respective mantra of the Yakṣa Generals.

 

At the premise’s northeast corner, the mantra of the Yakṣa General is:

Oṃ, sūrya ṭakki huṃ jyā svāhā.

 

At the premise’s southeast corner, the mantra of the Yakṣa General is:

Oṃ, agni ṭakki huṃ jyā svāhā.

 

At the premise’s southwest corner, the mantra of the Yakṣa General is:

Oṃ, soma ṭakki huṃ jyā svāhā.

 

At the premise’s northwest corner, the mantra of the Yakṣa General is:

Oṃ, vāyu ṭakki huṃ jyā svāhā.
